How to Be Happy Without Material Things

Ha ha! Right...like, is that even possible?! Find me one person in the United States who is happy without material things....

We've all heard the best things in life are free, blah, blah, blah...that's not the gist of this article. This is about how to be happy without all that stuff...

Truthfully I don't even know why I'm writing this article?!

I'm in love with my Apple computer. I deeply appreciate my headphones that magically cancel out the sounds of power tools, jet engines and other distractions. I inevitably lean towards luxury and quality even though I'm not much of a shopper, I have to admit, material things magnify my joy.

Technology helps me shift out of a bad attitude. Inspiration is so easy these days, You can just bookmark your favorite sites. You can also get lost in lots of meaningless entertainment. Not that it's all bad, sometimes mindlessness is as good as it gets.

But here's the deal--even before I had what I have now, I used to use whatever resources I did have access to, to cultivate a state of being that felt abundant. Long before everyone knew "the secret" to attracting prosperity and abundance, believing this would make them happy, I was simply doing whatever it took to feel happy.

The power of a positive attitude became infinitely abundant early in life. It's easy when all is going well to feel upbeat. I noticed that the same people who only felt good when they weren't being challenged were the same ones who experienced chronic buyers remorse. In spite of numerous purchases/gifts they ultimately became stressed out anyway.

I don't get buyers remorse and I hardly ever shop. I love my material possessions because they reflect aspects of who I am. Without knowing who you really are, you can't know what you really want. Until you know what you really feel, your mind will continue to get manipulated by everyone else's agenda.

In order for material things to make you happy, truly happy, you have to already be happy. Material things are just the icing on the cake. So...how to be happy without them? Engage in activities that make you feel alive. Notice what thoughts put a lid on your exuberance.

Do whatever it takes to eliminate belief systems that don't serve you anymore. Continually inspire yourself. Material possessions will find their way to you but they won't be the blink-of -an-eye-highlight of-your-day they once were, when you thought you couldn't be happy without them!

The bottom line is if you can't be happy without material things you won't really be happy with them! Prosperity and abundance and all the material possessions that go along with it are the effect of happiness. That's why our Constitution doesn't say "life, liberty and happiness" but "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." If material possessions aren't the effect of your state of being but are merely by products of a life filled with exhaustion and stress, what good are they? You won't enjoy them anyhow.
