Can You Be Happy in a Loveless Marriage?

On an almost daily basis, I have people who contact me and ask for advice on handling or coping with their "loveless marriage." Sometimes they are describing a relationship where the spark, connection, affection, and chemistry is gone. And other times, they mean that they and their spouse are no longer having sex.

Whatever the actual living arrangements, they are usually reaching out because they know that there is a serious flaw in their marriage and they want to find a way to be with happy within in.

Most of the time, they don't see divorce as an option perhaps because of their children or because they believe that this commitment should be forever. I often hear comments like "We'll never get divorced so how can I learn to be happy in my loveless marriage?" Or, "how can I survive and keep my sanity in a marriage without love?" In the following article, I'll explore whether it's possible to truly be happy when you're living in a loveless marriage.

Finding Happiness In A Loveless Marriage. Is It Possible? Before I get to this specific question, I want to offer some reassurance that this is an incredibly common situation. Often, when people tell me that they're living in a marriage which they don't see as loving, it's as if they confessing something truly strange, and they're almost ashamed of it. I have to tell you though that I'm seeing this situation with much more frequency.

Perhaps it's because of our economy or other external factors, but this situation is not one that is at all uncommon. So, if you're feeling guilt or shame, you can rest assured that you're most definitely not alone.

Another issue that I've noticed is that most people who contact me about this issue have given up hope that their marriage can or will change. Many of them see the lack of love as something that is going to be permanent. They usually aren't looking for a way to change the marriage into a loving one (at least at first.) Instead, they're looking for a way to be happy or to cope in spite of it. I find this to be somewhat frustrating because I've seen even marriages which appeared to be completely devoid of affection turn around.

But back to question of whether it's possible to be happy in this situation. I think that it's possible to be happy in other areas of your life. For example, you can be happy because of your children or your career or your friends. You can be happy with yourself. You can have a very rich internal and even external life so long as you are able to separate all of these things from your marriage.

And that's really where the problem lies. When you are in this situation, your ability to be happy almost lies within your ability to simultaneously separate your life from your marriage. This is not to say that it can't be done because I've seen people who are able to do this. They basically have come to accept their marriage for what it is and they live around it. And some of them even appear to be content.

But I'm always left wondering what would happen and what their life and contentment level would look like if they were able to find some love or loving feelings within their marriage again. I suspect life would go from firing on half cylinders to full cylinders and this would feel quite different to all involved.

I truly believe that you don't need to be in a romantic relationship to be happy. In other words, I certainly don't believe that a woman always needs a man to be complete or to feel fulfilled. But, when you are already in a relationship and are accepting that this relationship will never be a loving or fulfilling one, then I suspect that you might be selling yourself short.

Sure, you can learn to separate your satisfaction in other areas of your life from your marriage and in this case you could function just fine and even feel happiness and satisfaction. But the joy that comes from loving and feeling loved would be absent and I suspect that this absence would be certainly be felt.

Does this mean you can't be happy? Absolutely not. It just means that you have to learn to be happy without this particular aspect of your life present, which could potentially mean that although you don't reach your entire capacity for happiness, you generally feel happy enough.

What Are Your Options When You're Living In A Loveless Marriage?: Sometimes when I discuss this topic with folks, they tell me that they don't feel as if they really have any choices. For a variety of reasons, they aren't going to walk away from their marriage or from their spouse.

Mostly, I don't think that they feel that their problems are severe enough to walk away. Many tell me that their spouse is a good person with whom that get along but whom they just aren't "in love with."

So, the options would appear to be to leave the relationship in search of a better one. (And as I said this usually is seen as the last resort. I can certainly respect this because I too believe that in many cases, marriage should be forever.) The second option would be to learn to live around the marriage as best as you can and to seek happiness in other areas of your life. And some people have become quite good at this.

The third option would be try to improve the marriage so that you no longer have to try to mesh a loveless marriage with your own happiness. I am generally surprised that more people don't pursue this option. I firmly believe and have experienced marriages which had been "loveless" for years make dramatic and satisfying come backs. And I'll often suggest that this is certainly worth a try.

What do you have to lose if the marriage is already one that is lacking in love? I would suspect that the possibility of being happy in all areas of your life would make this an option worth pursuing.

It was my husband, not me, who felt that our marriage was "loveless," so he threatened to end it. I knew that it wasn't over for me and I refused to give up. I felt very strongly that we could be happy again. But, for a long time I drew on negative emotions rather than positive ones.

This seriously backfired. Thankfully, I realized my tactics were not working and changed course. Eventually, I was able to not only restore my husband's love, but to change the dynamics of our marriage. You can read a very personal story on my blog at http://isavedmymarriage.com/.

How to Be Happy, Have Fun and Enjoy Life

Can you really be happy and have fun all the time? Well, since nothing in life is perfect and nothing is 100%, the answer would be no. However, you can be happy most of the time and enjoy your life each and every day. There's really no big secret to it and I'll share with you a few simple tips on how to accomplish it.

Being happy is conducive to being healthy emotionally and physically. It helps you deal with the stresses of life; you become optimistic, confident, and resilient. Others will see this in you, and when you share your joy and positive attitude with them, you may just lighten their burdens and help them become more positive as well.

The most important thing to be happy and have fun most of the time is to believe that life is wonderful, and you are here to enjoy it to the fullest. Whatever you believe is true for you, and your beliefs help create reality. Yes, you will experience some down moments in life but if you have that positive attitude, those moments will be few and far between, and when they do come you will know just what to do to become happy again as quickly as possible.

Following are a few tips to help you enjoy your life the way it's meant to be.

When you wake up every morning tell yourself that you will enjoy the day no matter what. Expect good things to happen throughout the day.

Have an attitude of gratitude. Just look for things to be grateful and thankful for and you will find plenty. The bus driver that brings you safely to work, the delicious lunch you have with your friends, the mailman that delivers your mail, the beautiful flowers in your garden, and even the stranger that smiles at you in the grocery store.

Avoid the news. Yes, you read that right. The news is notorious for bringing up negative things that can add stress to your life: wars, disasters, crimes, diseases, bad economy, you name it. You don't need to feed yourself with those. Only watch, listen to, and read stuff that makes you happy, laugh, calm, or energetic. If something is important enough for you to know, it will be brought to your attention one way or another.

Be kind and helpful to others in every way possible. Open the door for someone behind you; pick up an empty can or bottle from the ground and put it in the trash can; be that stranger that smiles at others to brighten their day. When you do these simple things you will automatically feel good and be happy.

Release your inhibitions. As long as you're not breaking the law, don't be afraid to be yourself, act silly, or do things that give you a rush. Laugh out loud or giggle like a little girl; walk in the rain with no umbrella or raincoat and get yourself soaking wet; take a walk around the neighborhood in your bare feet; jump into a puddle of water; take a midnight swim. You need to use common sense but don't worry about what others think of you.

Be a spiritual person. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to be religious. Just take the time to find inner peace by praying, meditating, chanting or whatever else works for you. This will increase your level of happiness.

At the end of the day right before you go to sleep, reflect on everything you did and received throughout the day that brought you joy, and give thanks (to God or the universe) for having experienced it.

One last thing, and this may sound contradictory but it's not. Don't be afraid to cry when you need to. Yes, this goes for men too. Crying is not a sign of weakness but a way to release all the negative energy from within you so you can quickly bring happiness back in.

As you can see, it's simple and easy to be happy and have fun most of the time. Just decide today that you are going to enjoy your life and you will see the magic unfold.

Have a wonderful day!

Ways To Be Happy In Life: Spend Your Days Smiling Instead Of Struggling

It's simple. Feeling happy. It can be easy. You can do it every day.

Any person can find two things in a situation. Something to complain about. And something to smile about.

You can focus on the complaints. Your days will be painful. You'll feel like your alone in a dark alley. People will flee from your constant complaining. If you are thinking about how much you hate life, of course you'll be in a bad mood.

But that's just the beginning. You can focus on the reasons to smile. Your life will literally feel alive with energy. Every day will begin to feel like a holiday in the sun. You'll attract new friends everywhere you go.

When you focus on the positive you are choosing to be in a good mood. Think of how good it feels to be in a happy mood.

Please remember this point. What you think about most of the time will come out through your actions. There is no escaping this. You can, however, choose how you think.

And here's the kicker. Reality is objective. It is not positive or negative. Many choose to focus on the negative. Because of this, many will tell you that you are fooling yourself. They are wrong.

You have chosen a perspective of happiness. Ultimately neither perspective is correct. So why not choose the one that makes you want to spring out of bed in the morning?

Something amazing happens when you choose to focus on the positive. You change your relationship with the things that currently bring you pain. Where before you could not stand going to work, you'll instead go in with a smile.

All of us seem to share the same goal. We want to be happy. But what does that mean? Does it really require anything more than just making decisions that bring happiness?

Improving your life takes more than information. It takes a lot more. There isn't room here for everything, but you can get more here: How To Stop Procrastination [http://hiddenconstraints.com/whatiamdoing/how-to-stop-procrastination/]

Leaving Jehovah's Witnesses - Will I Ever Be Happy?

These are critical times for most Jehovah's Witnesses. After 40+ years among Jehovah's Witnesses, the majority of my adult life as a highly used elder, I don't think I've ever seen a time since the 1980's that has I could truly define as a 'crossroads' like I do now.

I was too young to remember much about the promises, innuendos and insinuations that came with the 1975 fiasco. However, by 1995 I was a Watchtower conductor and much more educated and cognizant of the dramatic changes that were occurring in 'the organization.' My first 'aha' moment was with the new 'generations' teaching that was subtly dropped into a study article in 1995. (Its been changed TWICE since then).

For those unfamiliar with Jehovah's Witnesses or the 'generations' doctrine that is the backbone of their organization, the leadership in New York ('the faithful and discreet slave' and the subject of an entirely different article) has hung their hat on a comment made by Jesus Christ at Matthew 24:34... ""

Truly I say to you that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur."... now never mind that this comment was made to three apostles while overlooking Jerusalem, they have long stated it applied to the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society and it's 'anointed' members; those left on earth to be included in the 144,000 that would be king/priests in heaven.

Throwing that all away... and despite their bold assertions in 1984 (including a Watchtower cover photo showing some of these people) that this group that saw 1914 would never completely die off (FYI, they're all dead), they have recently changed this life altering doctrine for the SIXTH TIME.

It has gotten the attention of many... or should I say, those within the organization that actually study the Bible or literature. Many millions do not. They simply blindly obey. There are many that are perfectly content to continue on in their normal weekly schedule of meetings, field service and 'personal study.' (read: underline WT literature and answer verbatim from publications). However, there are many that feel very uncomfortable with this latest development of yet another change.

Not to be ignored, is the recent change that only the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses (8 elderly men in Brooklyn, New York) are now to be identified as the 'faithful and discreet slave' mentioned in Matthew 24:44, 45 (try to ignore that its just a parable, NOT a prophecy!)... to the exclusion of all other anointed Witnesses left on earth.

As many JW's minds spin on these strange 'adjustments' in thinking, almost all experience the general lack of love among the ranks. The sense of a heavy malaise as they are told to go out and tell more people in their neighborhoods things they don't understand themselves!

Young people feel neglected and picked on as they deal with very real emotions and trial & error in their road to adulthood. Thousands are thrown out of the organization for everything from smoking to sex. Recent developments by courts has seen a huge spotlight cast on hidden pedophiles within the walls of the organization.

There are many reasons that some consider leaving Jehovah's Witnesses. Despite the mention of doctrinal changes above, the vast majority leave because they are tired, don't feel loved and aren't missed in their congregations. There are a few that may leave to pursue other things in life, things that aren't approved by Jehovah's Witnesses... but that is the minority.

How does a person leave Jehovah's Witnesses and actually attain happiness? That was a question I asked my self as I considered my own departure from the only religion I'd ever known. How does a person deal with the emotions: fear, anger, loss and guilt? Were they even reasonable emotions considering what I knew was the truth and what was clearly not? Where would I go; who would be my friends?

I wanted to focus on a happy life. With that in mind, I sought knowledge. I wanted concrete thoughts from God, wiser people, etc. to fill my mind. I would put out the effort to do just that over a 4 year period. The result:

HAPPINESS!

I can assure you, by spending just 15 minutes a day on positive thoughts... not just 'rah rah' comments, but real, concrete facts, consideration of God's personality and commands, etc... can free you from the cognitive dissonance heaped upon each JW with a steady diet of meetings, publications, assemblies, etc.

Choose happiness!

Make a Decision to Be Happy Today

The following quote by Carlos Castaneda just about sums up happiness: "The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same." Guess what? If you want to be happy all you do is make a decision to do so.

I once worked with a lady that had to be the most negative person on the planet--the Grinch times ten. She refused to smile, and always had a pessimistic disposition. The glass was always half empty for her, and it didn't need to be. Being happy is a choice that we can make right now as Mr. Castaneda states above. I agree that this sentiment can be easier said than done some days, but here's some help.

1. Laugh Today and Every Day.
Laughter has been proven time and time again to lower stress levels and blood pressure. It is also the easiest way to turn on the happy vibe. Watch a great new comedy at home or the movies. Check out YouTube for your favorite movie clip or comedian. There are countless videos available. I actually had a ball this afternoon watching clips of Eddie Murphy in Coming to America--classic.

2. Go to the Gym
This is one is not easy, granted but after you leave the gym you have the energy and clarity to take on any project on your plate. Maintaining good health and eating right just make sense. To know that you are improving your capacity for joy by pumping iron makes it all worthwhile.

3. Be Thankful
Pursuing goals with everything you've got is great and I commend all those out there on that track. But are you thankful (happy) with your life today and everything that you have? It is a scientific fact that being thankful increases your ability to be happy. You might have also guessed: a happy person and a thankful person have a ton of things in common. What can you be happy for right now?

4. Forgive and Move On.
"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong," said Mahatma Gandhi. The great ideological leader knew that we only harm ourselves when we refuse to forgive. Make a decision today to let go of any grudges that you have been holding on to. I assure you the void that's left will be filled with happiness.

5. Sing the Praises of Small Goals Met.
I met a young lady last year that considered herself to be heavy. I didn't think so, but she made it up in her mind that she needed to lose a certain amount weight. As she began losing weight, she would beam every time someone took notice. This was great, but she continued to downplay her progress-saying she would be happy only after she reached her predetermined number. Why couldn't she continue to pursue her ultimate goal, yet be thankful for the progress she had made today? Don't wait until tomorrow to be happy, you may miss something special today.
